Kusatsu

Kusatsu, located in the mountains of Gunma Prefecture, is often ranked as the best hot spring area of Japan. It’s central area, Yubatake, is a beautiful and unique sightseeing destination. It has been said that Kusatsu’s water could treat many illnesses.

Yubatake

The stunning central location in Kusatsu, it provides water to the many hot spring baths in Kusatsu, along with places for a quick foot bath around it. The high sulfur content of the water creates a beautiful, vibrant turquoise color, and its a common place for tourists to take pictures.

Mt. Shirane

Mt. Shirane, also called Kusatsu-Shirane, is a popular hiking destination for many, also offering a ropeway tour to the summit. The three lakes at the summit contain the same vibrant waters as Kusatsu’s Yubatake.

At this time, the summit of Mt. Shirane is closed to all tourism, due to its unexpected eruption in 2018. Currently, the volcanic activity warning is at its lowest level, but in the interest of safety, the restrictions have not been lifted.

Yumomi

Yumomi is the traditional way of cooling down Kusatsu’s extremely hot water without diluting it with cold water. This helps it keep its often cited healing properties. Yumomi is performed by stirring the water with a large wooden paddle, while singing a folk song and dance to all stay in rhythm. Some visitors can even join in and try stirring the water on their own!
